Wolf Downdraft Lift Motor and Limit Switches
Its job
- Raises the chimney out of the counter when UP/DOWN is pressed on the control module, and lowers it out of sight afterwards.
- Is a small gear motor working a crank — slow and strong, nothing like the fast-spinning blower it serves.
- Relies on micro-switches in the lift, which tell the board where the chimney is; one of them also decides when the blower may start.
Signs it is going
- Nothing moves and the chimney stays down — no power, a command that is not getting through, or a gear motor that has quit.
- Starts moving, then stops short of its travel — often a switch, or wear where the crank meets the motor.
- Reaches the top but the blower stays silent — sometimes the switch that reports the chimney's position, rather than the blower.
- Grinds or strains through its travel as the gear motor wears or the chimney binds in its slide.
Our order of work
- Confirm power, then whether the UP/DOWN light answers on the module, then the cable that runs from it to the unit.
- Test the micro-switches and the crank before the gear motor itself is condemned.
- Read the rating plate, which on a Wolf downdraft sits above the blower housing below the countertop, so the right parts are ordered.
- Fit factory-approved parts and run the chimney through several full cycles before we leave.
A downdraft that won’t rise is usually silent too
The blower takes its cue from the lift: a switch in the mechanism reports the chimney’s position, and that report decides when the blower may start.
So a downdraft that won’t rise and makes no sound points at power, the control or the lift before the blower.
If the chimney is up and the blower still says nothing, that switch moves to the head of our list.
Island kitchens wear it harder
A downdraft lifts every time the cooktop is used. On a busy island — the layout in many Wellington kitchens — the gear motor and its switches see a cycle at nearly every meal.
Two-Minute Check
Run it in order. Nothing here needs a panel off, a ladder or a wire touched.
- Check the breaker that feeds the downdraft — Wolf's before-you-call list starts with a tripped breaker or a power outage.
- Press UP/DOWN once, then allow the chimney a few seconds to begin moving before you touch anything else.
- Watch the module as you press: a light that stays dark points at the control or its cable rather than the lift.
- Take off anything sitting on the top trim or propped against the chimney, such as a pan lid, a board or a towel.
